Sashiko Embroidery

Sashiko is a Japanese form of needlework used to visibly mend or reinforce clothing. Sashiko was traditionally used to mend fabric, reinforce areas of high wear, or join multiple layers of fabric for warmer or more structured garments. This practice stems from the concept of Wabi-Sabi, which embraces beauty in impermanence and imperfection. This technique traditionally uses white or sometimes red thread on blue fabric to make geometric patterns. Sashiko is now used for everything from mending to quilting, and uses many colors of fabric and thread, so feel free to experiment with colors to create your beautiful sashiko!
