Alterations for Woven Shirts
Learn to alter dress shirts/button downs in this hands-on workshop. Making clothing fit well can be tricky, but with some simple techniques, you can master the art of tailoring to achieve a perfect fit. Whether you want to take in the sides or shorten the sleeves, we’ll guide you through the process of transforming an off-the-rack shirt into a custom-fitted piece.
In this 3-hour workshop, students will:
- Learn how to assess fit issues
- Take accurate body measurements
- Pin and mark for alterations
- Bring in side seams and sleeves using darts or seam adjustments
- Use a sewing machine to make alterations
**Some homework may be required to complete the alterations you learn.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Basic sewing machine operation (taught in "Sewing Basics 101")
- Either Sewing 102 and/or Sewing 103, OR have experience sewing a few simple projects.

SUPPLIES LIST:
- Fabric scissors/shears
- Pins
- Sewing machine (optional—bring your own or use ours)
- Seam ripper
- A shirt to alter. The shirt should fit in the shoulders, but be too wide in the body or sleeves, and/or too long in the sleeves. Woven fabrics only - NO KNITS.
